Dr. Melissa Barker is a Chiropractor, military wife and mother of two from Charlotte, NC. Melissa earned dual bachelor’s degrees from Tuskegee University in Biology/pre-med and Nutritional Science, and dual Master’s degrees from Ohio University in Human and Consumer Sciences and Nutrition. Melissa’s educational pursuits destined her for a career in allopathic medicine; however, her interest in natural health, wellness, and fitness guided her in a different direction.
Melissa faced a life-changing tragedy during her graduate studies. She was involved in an automobile accident in which her car flipped several times and wrapped around a tree. The damage to the vehicle all but solidified the expectations of a casualty; however, she was able to miraculously walk away from the accident with what appeared to be minor scrapes and scratches. Days following the accident proved much more serious injuries.
Melissa woke up the next morning unable to lift her head or get out of bed. This phenomenon was followed by moments of memory loss, migraine headaches, double vision, excruciating neck pain and back pain, and hormonal imbalance. These issues persisted for several months and worsened over time. Although she had never been to a Chiropractor, referral for Chiropractic care became a turning point in her life. Her experience was so life-changing that she chose to pursue a career in Chiropractic.
Melissa is a 2009 graduate of Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC Melissa’s mission throughout her 15 years as a Chiropractor is to give hope to those who are struggling with pain and have all but given up. Her passion for educating her patients as well as her desire to help patients “get their life back” is evident in every visit. Chiropractic is more than just neck and back pain, it identifies imbalances in the nervous system that leads to dis-ease in the body. Correcting misalignments of the spine releases tension on the nerves which, in turn, allows for clear communication between the brain and body thus eliminating pain and imbalances in the body.
